Advantages of Streaming

Friends and family are talking about streaming, but how do you get started?

  •  What is streaming?
  •  What Internet speed is recommended?
  •  What devices are needed?
  •  Popular streaming services

What is streaming?
Have you ever watched a YouTube video on your smartphone or a Netflix movie on your laptop?  That’s streaming.  It’s the way video and audio content are delivered over the Internet and has become a popular way to watch TV.

Why?  Because streaming lets you watch what you want, the moment you want to.  You don’t have to wait for a download to finish, your DVR to record, or the show to come on the air.

Why do I need an Internet connection?
Streaming players or Smart TV’s need Internet access to stream content. For the best viewing experience, a hard-wired Internet connection is recommended, and Jefferson Telecom can provide this connection. Otherwise for tablets, smartphones, etc. a wireless connection to your home network will be used by accessing your ONT or router.

For a positive streaming experience, Jefferson Telecom recommends an Internet download speed of at least 100 Mbps.  If you have multiple people in your household streaming at the same time one of our higher packages would be suggested with speeds up to our Gigabit connection (up to 940 Mbps) Jefferson Telecom does not recommend using mobile hotspots considering they are generally not as reliable as home broadband and have data caps.

What devices are needed?
You can watch streaming movies and TV shows on your smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop computer, HDTV, or “smart TV.” For example, you could connect your laptop to your HDTV with an HDMI cable and stream on your laptop and watch on the TV screen. If you have a “smart TV,” it has built-in apps (and app stores) and networking to get on the internet. You can use them to download most of the streaming apps you’d want.

If you don’t have a “smart TV”, no problem!  A device such as a Roku stick, or a Google Chromecast allows you to stream through your TV.  Jefferson Telecom has a supply of Roku sticks available for purchase.  Call Jefferson Telecom at 515-386-4141.  Plus watch this video to show you how easy it is to setup your Roku stick in your home.
